Every year, the radio station 88.5 XPN in Philadelphia conducts a survey of its listeners. Votes are tallied, and the result is the 885 Greatest Songs of All Time. As of the writing of this post, WXPN has published down to song number 770.
There are already some great songs on the list. Here are some notables:
- 879 - Least Complicated by The Indigo Girls
- 874 - Come Together by The Beatles
- 860 - The Babysitter’s Here by Dar Williams
- 859 - As Cool As I Am by Dar Williams
- 842 - Tuesday Afternoon by The Moody Blues
- 829 - You Really Got Me by The Kinks
- 826 - Samba Pa Ti by Santana
- 825 - Rainy Day Women #12 and #35 by Bob Dylan
- 824 - Question by The Moody Blues
- 818 - If I Had A Million Dollars by Barenaked Ladies
- 814 - Echoes by Pink Floyd
- 813 - The Christians and the Pagans by Dar Williams
- 781 - Werewolves of London by Warren Zevon
- 772 - It’s The End of the World as We Know It by R.E.M.
I predict in the top ten we will see The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, and Bruce Springsteen. Keep checking WXPN’s website—or better yet, tune in via internet or radio dial—for updates to their list, and eventually to see if I’m correct about the artists in the top ten.

The songs are getting more and more commercial as they reach the top 10 I guess that is to be expected since they were meant to reached a larger audience.
I predict either Bruce or Dylan for number one….I love Dylan but am now sick of the frequency at which I am hearing him on this list.
Does anybody out there have a soft spot in your overly sappy “let it be — bridge over troubled water” hearts for Sonic Youth??????????
