Public School Teachers Send Their Kids to Private Schools

According to a new study (reported in the Washington Times and elsewhere), public school teachers across the country are twice as likely as other parents to send their own children to private schools. The disparity is greater in cities. In Baltimore, more than one third of public school teachers’ children attend private school. The numbers are high for Washington and other cities as well.

Public school teachers know their school system better than anyone else. If teachers don’t believe the system is good enough for their own children, it says something important about the state of public education.

Parents want what’s best for their children and the quickest and easiest way of getting there. The quick and easy way definitely helps the individual, but society as a whole suffers. When the government provides vouchers for more students to easily leave the public school system, the main problem is not being solved. The problem also can’t be solved by directing money away from the schools that need it the most, as the No Child Left behind Act does.

Major reform is needed so the most amount of children are getting the best education. I don’t have any solutions, but it doesn’t hurt to think about possibilities.
